NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony kept losing the ball all night long, and now the New York Knicks have lost their hold on eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Black Friday Nike Air Max 97 . Anthony committed nine turnovers and Bradley Beal made another big shot at Madison Square Garden, a go-ahead jumper over Tyson Chandler with 6.9 seconds left as the Washington Wizards beat the Knicks 90-89 on Friday night. Beals jumper quieted the Garden crowd just as he did back on Dec. 16, when he beat the Knicks for a go-ahead layup. "Its pretty cool, I guess", Washingtons second-year guard said. "For them to go silent, thats kind of, Wow." John Wall, who added 19 points, combined with Beal for Washingtons final 12 to dampen New Yorks playoffs hopes. Anthony was favouring an ailing right shoulder he said he initially banged up during the win against Brooklyn on Wednesday. He felt it go out during the first half but decided to keep playing. He lost control of the ball as he tried to go left into the lane on New Yorks last possession, but J.R. Smith, who as of late has recaptured the form that earned him last years Sixth Man of the Year award, recovered it but missed a potential winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left. Smith finished with a season-high 32 points. "I felt like I lost the ball," Anthony said. "It was a tough loss, man. I wish I could have did better and played better. For the most part I thought my teammates did what they had to do. J.R. had a phenomenal game. I wish I could have rewarded that." The Knicks announced after the game that Anthony strained his right shoulder but X-rays were negative. He said he expects to play Sunday against the Miami Heat. New York dropped out of the final playoff position just two nights after moving into it by beating the Nets. Struggling Atlanta went back ahead by one game after beating the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier Friday. Smith would have liked to have had the chance to take the initial shot. "Yeah, no matter who that is, I always want the last shot. Its something Ive never been shy about", Smith said. Anthony, held to 10 points, made a jumper to cut the Wizards lead to 88-86 lead with 1:33 remaining. After Wall missed a long shot in front of the arc at the top of the key, Anthony tried to connect with Tim Hardaway Jr., who was open near the Washington bench for a 3, but Martell Webster intercepted Anthonys pass. The Knicks got the ball back after Wall lost control of it as he drove to the basket. With 33.5 seconds left, Anthony then found an open Raymond Felton for a 3-pointer to give the Knicks an 89-86 lead, but Beal answered with his jumper over Chandler, who had come out to help. It was the second straight win for Washington, which clinched its first playoff since 2008 on Wednesday. "Our defence was pretty good but Trevors (Ariza) defence on Carmelo was outstanding", Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "Trevor fought and fought him. At the end we decided to trap him and make someone else beat us." The Knicks couldnt and now they will face a tough challenge Sunday when they travel to face the Miami Heat, who have already beaten them twice this season. The Knicks have five remaining games, three on the road, against three teams that are all playoff-bound in the East. New York cant afford to have its leading scorer out. "Well I knew it was bothering him, but you know weve got to have Melo on the floor," Woodson said. "Again, it was a hard-fought game. Our guys came up defeated, so now we have to figure out how were going to get it back because ... Atlanta won tonight." Notes: Former Buffalo Bills quarterback and Hall of Famer Jim Kelly attended the game with his family. Kelly, who is battling his second bought with cancer, will undergo treatment next week at a hospital in the city. ... NEW YORK -- Overcome by heat and humidity in the second set of her U.S. Open semifinal, Chinas Shuai Peng paused between points to clutch at her left thigh and put her weight on her racket as if it were a cane. Still, she tried to continue Friday against Caroline Wozniacki. One point later, Peng dropped her racket and grabbed at her right knee, then staggered toward the wall behind the baseline and leaned against it, wiping away tears, until a trainer ran to her side. Others arrived, too: a doctor, the chair umpire, a tournament official, a security guard, a ballkid with an umbrella to offer shelter from the sun. Fighting pain in both legs and her back, a limping Peng was helped over to a hallway adjacent to the court, where it was determined she had heat illness and needed treatment. In all, it was a 10-minute delay, which Wozniacki used to practice serving. Yet again, Peng tried to play on. She stuck it out for six more points, before collapsing to the ground, resting on her hands and knees as Wozniacki walked around the net to check on her. Peng stopped while trailing 7-6 (1), 4-3, allowing Denmarks Wozniacki to reach her second Grand Slam final. At a news conference more than four hours later, Peng said she was feeling better. She was not sure whether, in the end, she was the one who said she had to retire or was told to (although tournament director David Brewer said it was Pengs decision). Peng, who is 28, did recall how she reacted when the doctor suggested it might be a good idea to quit. "I said, No, no, no. I dont want to give up. I want to try one more time," said Peng, who was playing in her first semifinal in 37 career major tournaments. "I knew Im not going to stay maybe too long, but I just want to try, you know. I just wanted to challenge her one more time." Eventually, Peng was taken away in a wheelchair, closing the scary and surreal scene. "It was really hard to watch," said the 10th-seeded Wozniacki, who lost the 2009 U.S. Open title match. "To see her struggling out there -- I just wanted to make sure she was OK." In Sundays final, Wozniacki will face good pal Serena Williams, who overwhelmed 17th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-1, 6-3 to extend her U. Clearance Nike Air Max 97. . Open winning streak to 20 matches. If she can make that 21 in a row, the No. 1-ranked Williams will become the first woman since Chris Evert in the 1970s to win three consecutive titles at the tournament. "I can say: Yes, shes much better than everyone," Makarova said, when asked to compare Williams to todays other top players. Seeking a sixth U.S. Open championship and 18th major singles title overall, which would tie her with Evert and Martina Navratilova, Williams has won all 12 sets shes played these two weeks. While warming up for her semifinal -- in which she won nine straight games and 22 of 24 points in one stretch -- Williams saw on TV what was happening to Peng. "I was really, really, really saddened by it. Shes such a great person. We train sometimes at the same academy," Williams said. "You never want to see anyone go out like that." Peng, who spoke during the tournament about nearly being forced to quit tennis after having heart surgery at age 12, began showing signs of distress early in the second set, rubbing her legs between points. When things got really bad, she said, she felt cramping that made it hard to breathe. Players are not allowed to get medical treatment from a trainer or doctor in the middle of a game if all that is wrong is cramping. If thats what makes them take a break during the course of play, they can be docked a point -- or even a full game -- for taking too much time. But a broader diagnosis of heat illness does make a player eligible for treatment. "It was determined that it would not be physically harmful for her to go back out and try to play tennis again," Brewer said. Wozniacki did not complain -- while all of this was happening or later at her news conference -- about the lack of a penalty for time violation. She was, however, thrown off a bit by the whole scene. "First of all, you want her to be OK," Wozniacki said. "Then you also are thinking she might still be able to compete, so you have to kind of ... try and think about yourself as well and just say, OK, she might just go out there and start to hit winners. So you have to be ready for everything." ' ' '
